GRT Acquires Patent for MLCC Release Film... Countdown to Entering 4 Trillion Won Market
Functional film specialist GRT announced on the 19th that it is entering the release film business for MLCC (Multilayer Ceramic Capacitor) simultaneously with obtaining a patent.
In May, GRT acquired a patent in China for the production process of release films for MLCC. The company has been simultaneously preparing research and development and customer acquisition, and recently completed technical certification for some Chinese customers, paving the way for mass supply. The release film business for MLCC has already secured major domestic and international customers, including Samhwan Group, a leading company in the Chinese industry. In addition to release films, GRT has been supplying MLCC-related products to major domestic corporations for some time.
Release films are essential consumables in the MLCC manufacturing process, and MLCCs, which are components that control stable electrical flow in electronic circuits, are indispensable parts in the manufacturing of various electronic products such as electric vehicles, smartphones, laptops, and home appliances. The MLCC market size is expanding in line with increasing demand from the downstream market. According to a Chinese industry report, the global MLCC release film market size was 21 billion yuan (approximately 3.8 trillion KRW) in 2021 and is expected to surpass 24 billion yuan (approximately 4.3 trillion KRW) by 2025.
The Chinese MLCC market is rapidly growing, driven by explosive demand for products such as electric vehicle electronics and smartphones. Although China previously relied heavily on imports of MLCC products, the import dependency is decreasing as the technological capabilities of Chinese-made products improve. GRT, which has an extensive network of Chinese customers, is expected to benefit significantly.
GRT operates a total of three production plants in Jiangyin City and Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, China, boasting the industry's largest film production capacity. The newly established third plant covers approximately 4.08 million square meters, about three times the combined area of the first and second plants, securing an annual film production capacity of 6.03 million square meters, about 33% larger than before. Additionally, the company has introduced a clean management system that enables temperature and humidity control within the workspace, creating an optimized production environment.
