Gyeonggi Nambu Police Investigate Election Commission's Preferential Hiring of Children Case
The police have expressed their intention to consider applying for arrest warrants against the executive committee of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Construction Union, who forcibly held a one-night, two-day homeless protest in the city center.
On the 12th, Woo Jong-su, head of the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency, said at a press briefing, "We have requested the KCTU Construction Union to appear for the fourth time by the 14th," adding, "Since we have requested their appearance multiple times, if they continue to refuse, we will actively consider applying for arrest warrants."
Earlier, the Construction Union expressed their intention to voluntarily appear after completing the funeral of the late Yang Hoe-dong, the 3rd district head of the Gangwon Construction Branch of the Construction Union. The police conducted a search and seizure of the KCTU-affiliated Construction Union office on the 9th after they failed to respond to three summonses.
The police stated that they will distinguish between lawful assemblies and illegal gatherings disguised as nighttime cultural events based on precedents. Head Woo said, "If collective actions such as chanting slogans or holding placards are carried out under the guise of a nighttime cultural event, it is considered an assembly," adding, "On-site police officers will make judgments referring to precedent interpretations that specify the law."
Regarding the preferential hiring of children related to the Election Commission, the police said that the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency is investigating a total of 14 people. Head Woo stated, "We have currently received investigation requests for four people from the Election Commission," and added, "Citizen groups have also requested investigations for six people related to hiring corruption, four of whom overlap with those requested by the Election Commission." Including the filing of complaints against the Election Commission chairman and all eight commissioners, a total of 14 people are under investigation.
Regarding investigations related to national subsidies, he said, "We have received 10 investigation requests related to national subsidies from the Board of Audit and Inspection," adding, "These have been assigned to the relevant provincial offices and fact-finding is underway." Earlier, the Presidential Office revealed that about 30 billion won of national subsidies were fraudulently used in private organization projects exceeding one trillion won over the past three years.
Regarding the preferential treatment case in the Donghae Mangsang district, Head Woo said, "There have been past internal investigations or investigations into this case," adding, "We are reviewing past records and some voluntarily submitted materials, and are also analyzing certain accounts."
Regarding the search and seizure of MBC News Department related to Minister Han Dong-hoon's personal information investigation, he explained, "The search was conducted during the process of verifying the transmission stage," adding, "This is not the first time the news department has been searched; it was carried out as necessary for the investigation."
