LG Chem Partners with World No.1 Cosmax to Produce Eco-Friendly Cosmetic Containers
Proposing Eco-Friendly Materials to Over 1,000 Global Cosmetics Companies
LG Chem is partnering with Cosmax, the world's No. 1 cosmetics original design manufacturing (ODM) company, to launch a recycled plastic cosmetics container business.
LG Chem recently announced on the 11th that it signed a business agreement with Cosmax at the LG Twin Towers in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, to jointly develop cosmetics containers using eco-friendly materials and conduct joint marketing targeting global cosmetic companies. Cosmax provides products from development to finished goods to over 1,000 global clients, including L'Or?al. Both companies, leaders in the chemical and cosmetics industries respectively, expect this agreement to be an opportunity to promote K-Beauty with eco-friendly materials to global customers.
LG Chem will start by supplying Cosmax with recycled plastic, specifically Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) high value-added synthetic resin (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, ABS), and propose various eco-friendly materials while collaborating on all processes from cosmetics container development to marketing. LG Chem plans to supply eco-friendly materials with differentiated technologies, such as transparent products considering aesthetics and antibacterial products focusing on safety and health. The scope will later expand to materials applying pyrolysis oil (chemical recycling) and bio-based raw materials.

The cosmetics industry has a fast product consumption and replacement cycle, resulting in high plastic usage and waste, making the transition to recycled plastic eco-friendly materials essential. Recently, with the strengthening of environmental regulations such as the European Union (EU)'s introduction of the carbon border tax, many global cosmetic companies have announced plans to attach a carbon footprint label to their products and increase the use of recycled plastics by 2030. The carbon footprint is an indicator representing the total amount of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide) generated during the production and consumption of a product.
Byungman Lee, CEO of Cosmax, said, “Cosmax is developing products with many clients worldwide, including the U.S. and China, and requests for eco-friendly packaging development are rapidly increasing among global customers. We will take this collaboration between the two companies as a great opportunity and continue to develop it.”
