China and Russia Plan Joint Military Exercises Following 'Aerial Force Demonstration' (Comprehensive)
China and Russia have agreed to conduct joint military exercises in China.
On the 9th, according to the WeChat channel of the Chinese Ministry of National Defense and Russia's TASS news agency, Liu Zhenli, Chief of Staff of the Joint Staff Department of the Central Military Commission of China, and Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, held a video call to discuss ways to deepen military cooperation between the two countries.
During the call, both sides confirmed Russia's participation in the 'Northern Joint-2023' exercises to be held in China. However, the timing and location of the exercises were not disclosed.
On the same day, Chief of General Staff Gerasimov told Liu, who became the youngest top military commander in March, "I am confident that your extensive experience will contribute to the development of the Chinese military and the expansion of military cooperation between our two countries."
He added, "Currently, the comprehensive partnership between our two countries has reached the highest level, and the coordinated efforts of the two nations on the international stage have a stabilizing effect on global affairs."
He also stated, "The practice of our two militaries conducting joint operations and combat training should remain an important area going forward."
Earlier, China and Russia conducted aerial shows of force in the Northeast Asia region in response to the strengthening security cooperation among the three countries of South Korea, the United States, and Japan. On the 6th, the air forces of both countries conducted the '6th Joint Air Strategic Patrol' over the East Sea and the East China Sea, and on the 7th over the Western Pacific.

During this operation, military aircraft from both countries entered and then exited the Korean Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ) over the South Sea and East Sea of South Korea on the 6th, and flew over the airspace near Japan on the 7th, prompting protests from South Korea and Japan.
