Chairman Lee Jae-yong Attends Samsung Ho-Am Awards Ceremony for Second Consecutive Year
First Samsung Ho-Am Prize Event Since Chairman's Inauguration
33rd Samsung Ho-Am Prize Award Ceremony Held at 4 PM on the 1st, 2023
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong attended the Samsung Ho-Am Prize Awards Ceremony for the second consecutive year following last year. This year’s event held special significance as it was the first Samsung Ho-Am Prize ceremony since Chairman Lee’s inauguration.
The Ho-Am Foundation held the "33rd Samsung Ho-Am Prize Awards Ceremony for 2023" at 4 p.m. on the 1st at the Dynasty Hall of the Shilla Hotel in Seoul.
This year’s laureates are ▲ Science Prize in Physics and Mathematics: Lim Ji-soon (72), Distinguished Professor at POSTECH ▲ Science Prize in Chemistry and Life Sciences: Choi Kyung-shin (54), Professor at the University of Wisconsin, USA ▲ Engineering Prize: Seon Yang-guk (62), Chair Professor at Hanyang University ▲ Medicine Prize: Marcia Haigis (49), Professor at Harvard Medical School, USA ▲ Arts Prize: Cho Seong-jin (29), Pianist ▲ Social Service Prize: Global Care Corporation. Each laureate received a certificate, a medal, and a prize money of 300 million KRW, totaling 1.8 billion KRW.

The ceremony was attended by about 250 people including the laureates’ families, acquaintances, award officials, and Samsung executives. Due to the overseas performance schedule of the Arts Prize laureate, pianist Cho Seong-jin, his mentor, Professor Shin Soo-jung, Emeritus Professor at Seoul National University, accepted the award on his behalf. The ceremony proceeded with greetings from Kim Hwang-sik, Chairman of the Ho-Am Foundation, a judging report by Hyun Taek-hwan, Chair Professor at Seoul National University, followed by awards presentation, acceptance speeches, and a congratulatory violin performance by Park Soo-ye. The entire event was broadcast live online.
In his greeting, Chairman Kim Hwang-sik congratulated the laureates, saying, "It is a great joy and pride to welcome such outstanding individuals who have made remarkable achievements through dedicated efforts in academia, arts, and social service, contributing to the advancement of human society and the noble practice of human love."
The Ho-Am Foundation plans to hold an online knowledge lecture series again this August for youth nationwide during their summer vacation. The lectures will cover various cutting-edge topics including the latest science and technology, humanities, and arts, featuring talks by experts in each field and online discussions with participating youth.
The Samsung Ho-Am Prize was established in 1990 by the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee to honor the spirit of Ho-Am Lee Byung-chul’s emphasis on talent development and social contribution. It recognizes individuals who have made outstanding achievements in academia, arts, social development, and the promotion of human welfare. To date, 170 laureates have been awarded a total of 32.5 billion KRW in prize money over 33 award ceremonies.

Chairman Lee Jae-yong has continued the late Chairman Lee Kun-hee’s vision by further advancing the Samsung Ho-Am Prize to foster basic national science. The business community interprets Chairman Lee’s efforts as a continuation and development of his predecessor’s philosophy of "business serving the nation," contributing more to national development and demonstrating his commitment as Samsung’s "new leader" to a "future partnership" with society.
