BOK Hosts International Conference... "Exploring Policy Challenges After the Pandemic"
The Bank of Korea is organizing a forum with leading global economists to explore policy challenges and response measures in the changed environment following the COVID-19 pandemic, including high inflation and global economic fragmentation.
The Bank of Korea announced on the 30th that it will hold the 2023 BOK International Conference under the theme "Policy Challenges After the Pandemic" at the BOK Conference Hall from the 1st to the 2nd of next month. This conference will be held in person for the first time in four years.
The BOK International Conference has been held since 2005, but was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, and was conducted via virtual meetings last year.
At the opening session of this conference, Narayana Kocherlakota, professor at the University of Rochester and former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, will deliver the keynote speech. A policy dialogue will be held among three individuals: Lee Chang-yong, Governor of the Bank of Korea; Thomas Sargent, professor at New York University, Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2011 and advisor to the Bank of Korea.
They will discuss the causes of recent high inflation, the sustainability of the U.S. national debt, and seek desirable policy responses. The three-person policy dialogue is being introduced for the first time at this conference and will be broadcast live online via the Bank of Korea's YouTube channel.
The general sessions will consist of paper presentations and discussions (four sessions), as well as a panel session with a comprehensive discussion format.
From overseas, participants include George J. Hall, professor at Brandeis University; Charles M. Kahn, professor at the University of Illinois; Sarah Jubeiri, professor at Texas A&M University; Dariya Zakharova, Deputy Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and officials from central banks and international organizations of various countries.
