Busan City Hosts Roundtable Meeting Inviting 8 Leading Cities in the Climate Industry
Leaders from eight cities, including Busan, gathered in Busan to discuss measures for achieving carbon neutrality.
On the 26th at 2 p.m., Busan City hosted a ‘City Summit’ mayoral roundtable meeting at the BEXCO Convention Hall, inviting mayors from eight leading global climate industry cities to discuss setting carbon neutrality goals and implementation plans.
This ‘City Summit’ is a conference event of the ‘2023 World Climate Industry EXPO (WCE),’ held at Busan BEXCO from the 25th to the 27th.
Part 1 of the City Summit, the ‘Mayoral Roundtable Meeting,’ hosted and organized by Busan City, is a forum to discuss policies and cooperation measures to solve urban problems caused by the climate crisis and to share cases of building sustainable eco-friendly cities.
The meeting includes ▲ Park Hyung-joon, Mayor of Busan ▲ Wayne Brown, Mayor of Auckland, New Zealand ▲ Abderrahim Outass, Deputy Mayor of Casablanca, Morocco ▲ Guilhermina Filomena Saldanha, Mayor of Dili, East Timor ▲ Jesper Frost Rasmussen, Mayor of Esbjerg, Denmark ▲ Manuel Omeng, Governor of Luanda, Angola ▲ Aharub Ebrahim Katri, Speaker of the County Assembly of Mombasa, Kenya ▲ LaToya Cantrell, Mayor of New Orleans, USA ▲ Carlos Ward Edwards, Vice Chair of the Santiago City Council, Chile.
The leaders of each city will introduce exemplary cases of carbon-neutral cities, share policies for achieving carbon neutrality by city, and seek cooperation measures and development directions.
After the discussions, the representatives of the cities plan to issue a joint declaration for the first time, committing to efforts to transform into carbon-neutral cities that contribute to sustainable social, economic, and industrial development.
Following this, Part 2, the ‘Carbon Neutral City Session,’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, will review major cases such as maritime cities and Copenhagen, which are sustainable urban future plans, and discuss strategies and measures to achieve carbon neutrality.
Mayor Park Hyung-joon said, “I sincerely welcome the overseas city mayors visiting Busan,” adding, “We will make this a meaningful time to share the recognition that it is important to realize greenhouse gas emission reductions and implement carbon-neutral cities in response to the climate change crisis.”

He continued, “We will also strive to positively influence the bid for the 2030 Busan World Expo by highlighting the image of Busan as a leading carbon-neutral city.”
