Changwon City Welfare Center Relocation and New Building Opening Ceremony Held
New Home Established to Support Rehabilitation
Changwon City in Gyeongnam Special City held the opening ceremony of the Changwon City Welfare Center at 2 p.m. on the 23rd at the new building located at 341 Gyodong-ri, Jindong-myeon, Masanhappo-gu.
The opening ceremony was attended by Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, city and provincial council members, and 100 local residents. The event proceeded in the order of a congratulatory performance by a performance team, progress report, commemorative speech, congratulatory address, commemorative tree planting, and facility tour.

View original imageThe existing building of the Changwon City Welfare Center was constructed in 1972 (50 years ago), before the enactment of the "Act on Welfare and Self-Support for the Homeless, etc.," on a riverbed site in Hoeseong-dong, Masanhwawon-gu, and due to its location, expansion or reconstruction at the current site was impossible. Additionally, the building did not meet current legal facility area regulations, and the aging building and limited facilities caused many difficulties.
The new building was newly constructed with a total floor area of 1,632.53㎡, consisting of one basement floor and two above-ground floors, with a project cost of 7 billion KRW. It is equipped with spacious and comfortable living rooms, rehabilitation program rooms, self-support workshops, infectious disease prevention facilities, a dedicated vegetable garden, and a playground, and is expected to become the best building nationwide as a welfare facility for the homeless.

Mayor Hong said, “The Changwon City Welfare Center has obtained a new building for the first time in 50 years since its construction,” adding, “We will operate various programs for the rehabilitation and self-reliance of the homeless in a pleasant environment, and provide continuous follow-up care through linkage with housing support projects for homeless people who have left the center, thereby supporting integrated community services that embrace the local community and contributing to healthy social reintegration and welfare promotion.”
