Creating a community atmosphere for practicing healthy living
According to Yongsan-gu’s “2021 Community Health Statistics” published in March 2022, the walking practice rate among residents in the area was 69.3% in 2019, 62.5% in 2020, and 55.1% in 2021, while the healthy living practice rate was 55.7% in 2019, 48.2% in 2020, and 42.5% in 2021, showing a declining trend for three consecutive years.
Yongsan-gu will hold the “Walk from Hangang-ro to Hannam-dong” walking challenge from the 22nd of this month until the 22nd of next month. This is to increase residents’ physical activity, which has decreased due to social distancing, and to help manage chronic diseases.
The participants are residents and smartphone users. To participate, press the challenge participation button on the WalkOn app and walk the designated course. The smartphone’s location information (GPS) must be activated.
The district will give premium towels to 150 participants who complete more than 90% of the walking course through a lottery in July.
The walking course is a 3.3 km section connecting Samgakji Station - Noksapyeong Station - Itaewon Station - Leeum Museum of Art - Hangangjin Station. Walking the course in reverse order is also allowed.
A district official said, “We selected Itaewon-ro as the main street for the walking course to help revitalize the depressed Itaewon commercial district.”
If participants start from Samgakji Station, they will pass a road lined with decades-old plane trees near the War Memorial of Korea and reach the Noksapyeong pedestrian bridge, the filming location of Itaewon Class. Then, they will pass through the World Food Street and Leeum Museum of Art before arriving at the Yongsan Craft Museum.
Kim Seonsu, Acting Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “Overweight caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits is a cause of chronic diseases. We will continuously promote projects to spread a healthy culture that helps residents escape chronic diseases.”
