About 10 North Korean Residents Defect Through the NLL
About 6 Years Since July 2017... Joint Interview in Progress
It has been confirmed that North Korean residents defected by crossing the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea earlier this month. This is the first publicly known case in about six years since July 2017 of North Korean residents defecting by crossing the NLL by boat as a family unit.
Amid ongoing 'territorial disputes' over Hambakdo, an uninhabited island near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea, North Korean military facilities can be seen on Hambakdo as viewed from Maldo-ri, Seodo-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, on the morning of the 24th. On this day, a Ministry of National Defense official stated that the structures on Hambakdo are buildings and military barracks built by North Korean troops for self-sufficiency, with supporting foundations installed for constructing the barracks. It is known that about 10 North Korean residents, including young children, were on board the fishing boat. The military deployed maritime forces to board the boat that crossed the NLL and headed toward the waters near Yeonpyeong Island, conducting inspections and confirming their intention to defect. At that time, they reportedly stated, "We did not drift here by accident. We intend to defect." After investigating the possibility of disguised defection until dawn on the 7th, the military secured the individuals and transported them to a military base in the Seoul metropolitan area on the same morning. Currently, the military police, the National Intelligence Service, and other related authorities are conducting joint interrogations of them at an undisclosed location in the Seoul metropolitan area.

It is analyzed that the defection of two North Korean families this time is likely due to worsening living conditions for North Korean residents caused by food shortages and other difficulties.
