Since the 15th of this month until the 30th of next month, Mokpo Maritime Police, together with related organizations such as the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (Mokpo branch) and the Fisheries Cooperatives (Mokpo, Yeonggwang, Jindo, Sinan), will conduct preventive publicity and guidance activities to reduce marine pollution caused by marine litter such as bilge water and waste oil (waste lubricants) generated from fishing vessels.
According to Mokpo Maritime Police, among 58 marine pollution accidents in the jurisdiction over the past three years, 26 cases (44.8%) were caused by fishing vessels, with a spillage volume of 21.2㎘ (24.9%).
Accordingly, they plan to implement proactive prevention management and active practice campaigns including △the campaign to bring back waste generated from fishing vessels △on-site investigation of waste lubricant returns from fishing vessels △distribution of foreign language promotional materials △real-name system for lubricant containers (at fishing vessel fueling stations) △marine announcement broadcasts (Fishing Vessel Safety Operation Bureau).
