"If You Want to Be Scolded, Come to Me"... The Top Workplace Bullying Issue Is 'This'
Sharp Increase After Endemic... Insults and Defamation 18.9%
Unfair Orders 16.9% · Assault and Verbal Abuse 14.4% 순
Although it has been four years since the Workplace Bullying Prohibition Act was enacted, a survey revealed that many cases of bullying persist, including verbal abuse and insulting remarks by supervisors at work.
On the 14th, Workplace Gapjil 119, together with the Office and Finance Ubuntu Foundation, commissioned the public opinion research firm 'Embrain Public' to conduct a survey titled 'Workplace Bullying Experienced in the Past Year' from the 3rd to the 10th, targeting 1,000 office workers. The results were announced.
The results showed that insults and defamation were the highest at 18.9%. This was followed by unfair orders at 16.9%, assault and verbal abuse at 14.4%, coercion outside of work duties at 11.9%, and ostracism and discrimination at 11.1%.
In particular, assault and verbal abuse decreased from 14.2% in June 2021 to 7.3% in March last year but rose again to 14.4% in this survey. This is interpreted as an increase in assault and verbal abuse alongside the trend of returning from remote work to face-to-face work after the COVID-19 endemic.
Among 372 reports of workplace bullying received via email from January to April this year, insults and defamation accounted for 110 cases (29.6%), ostracism, discrimination, and retaliation for 196 cases (52.7%), and verbal abuse and assault for 159 cases (42.7%).
According to Workplace Gapjil 119, whistleblower A reported that the company manager routinely uses "ya" (a casual and somewhat rude way to call someone) and even calls people "agari" (a derogatory term for mouth). The manager gathers all workers on site and verbally abuses them with all kinds of insults and even personal attacks, blaming them for poor performance. The manager also openly said in a KakaoTalk chat, "If you want to curse at someone, come to me. I will curse at you as much as you want."
Another whistleblower from a different company complained about ongoing verbal abuse and untransferred tasks. The whistleblower said, "I am preparing to report due to continuous verbal abuse. My insomnia has worsened, and I am planning to visit a psychiatrist."
