'T?rkiye Presidential Election' Erdogan's Vote Share Falls Below 50%... Possible Runoff on 28th
In the Turkish presidential election held on the 14th (local time), President Recep Tayyip Erdogan failed to secure 50% of the votes in the later stages of the count, increasing the likelihood of a runoff election on the 28th.
According to local Turkish media on the day, with 91% of the votes counted, President Erdogan recorded 49.9% of the vote. He led his rival, Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılı?daro?lu (44.4%), by 5.1 percentage points but failed to secure a majority.
If a candidate obtains a majority in this vote, the election ends immediately. However, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, a runoff election must be held two weeks later.
According to the state-run TRT broadcaster, the voter turnout on the day was 85.6%, lower than the 86.2% turnout in the 2018 presidential election.
Both inside and outside Turkey, attention is focused on whether this election will mark the end of President Erdogan's 20-year authoritarian rule or open the path to lifelong rule. Public discontent has been prominent due to the government's poor response to the major earthquake, authoritarian governance, and a near-collapse economy. However, if President Erdogan wins, he could remain in power until as late as 2033.
