Residents appealed, "Please establish fundamental measures to prevent accidents in school zones." In response, Mayor Lee promised, "We will establish safety measures and inform the citizens."
Earlier, at around 12:35 PM on the 10th, Jo (8) was crossing the crosswalk at the intersection in front of the Homaesil-dong Administrative Welfare Center, a designated school zone, when he was hit and killed by a bus making a right turn. The pedestrian signal was green, and the right-turn-only signal was red, but the bus violated the signal and caused the accident while turning right.
On the 12th afternoon, Suwon City held a meeting at Suwon City Hall with representatives of transportation companies, requesting, "Please continuously educate bus operators to strictly comply with traffic laws and drive safely." They also discussed measures to prevent recurrence of such accidents.
Transportation company officials proposed accident prevention measures including ▲ relocating the crosswalk for right turns about 10 meters away from the intersection ▲ reinforcing safety devices inside and outside buses ▲ strengthening safety education for transportation workers.
Suwon City stated that it will actively reflect the installation and maintenance of accident prevention facilities for transportation workers and the installation of warning sensors on buses at the level of passenger cars.
Based on the results of this meeting, Suwon City plans to promptly establish comprehensive measures to prevent accidents in school zones.
First, Suwon City will request the police to install additional right-turn-only traffic signals in the jurisdiction and further strengthen safety education for bus and taxi operators. Accordingly, the local government’s own education, which is currently held once a year, will be expanded to once each in the first and second halves of the year. Additionally, transportation companies will conduct their own education sessions once a month.
Furthermore, the number of 'Child Pedestrian Safety Instructors,' currently 50 people (covering 30 schools), will be expanded to 100 people (covering 60 schools). In addition, voice guidance assistive devices, slip-resistant colored pavement, and smart crosswalk systems will be additionally installed.
In particular, street trees at intersections that obstruct the view of bus operators will be pruned, and enforcement against illegal parking will be strengthened to maintain facilities that interfere with driving.
