President Zelensky Arrives in Rome... Also to Meet Pope Francis
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Rome, the capital of Italy, on the morning of the 13th (local time), local media outlets including ANSA reported simultaneously.

According to reports, President Zelensky arrived at Rome Ciampino Military Airport at 10:13 a.m. Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, personally welcomed President Zelensky. From 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., President Zelensky is scheduled to hold a summit meeting with President Sergio Mattarella at the presidential residence, the Quirinal Palace in Rome.
Later, during lunchtime, he plans to meet with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Tajani, ANSA reported. This is President Zelensky’s first visit to Italy since Russia’s invasion in February of last year.
As the war with Russia enters a prolonged phase, he is expected to request continued support from Western countries including Italy, as well as discuss postwar reconstruction projects. Last month on the 26th, Prime Minister Meloni held a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who visited Rome, to discuss ways for Italian companies to participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts.
Afterwards, President Zelensky will visit the Vatican to meet Pope Francis. President Zelensky announced this himself on Twitter. After announcing his arrival in Rome, he said, “I will meet Italy’s President Mattarella, Prime Minister Meloni, and Pope Francis,” adding, “This is an important visit to move closer to Ukraine’s victory.”

The meeting between President Zelensky and Pope Francis is expected to take place around 4 p.m. Pope Francis publicly revealed on the 30th of last month that he is carrying out a secret peace mission to end the war in Ukraine.
