Seocho-gu Designates 'Seocho Shopping' as the 2nd Alley-type Shopping District
Following the designation of Maljukgeori Alley-type Shopping District, Seocho Shopping designated as the 2nd Alley-type Shopping District on the 11th
Foundation laid with the amendment and promulgation of the ‘Ordinance on the Promotion and Management of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts’ last February
Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) designated ‘Seocho Shopping,’ located at 90-7 Gomurae-ro, Seocho-dong, as the 2nd alley-type shopping district in Seocho-gu on the 11th and presented the designation certificate.
An alley-type shopping district is a system that grants qualifications similar to traditional markets to areas where 30 or more small business operators run stores within 2,000㎡ regardless of business type, featuring relaxed designation requirements compared to existing shopping districts.
To revitalize the alley economy, the district amended and promulgated the ‘Ordinance on the Promotion and Management of Traditional Markets and Shopping Districts’ last February, establishing a legal foundation to support alley-type shopping districts.
In particular, the clause requiring consent from building owners and landowners, which was a mandatory condition for alley-type shopping district designation, was removed to ease the designation conditions.
The designation of a single-type shopping building like ‘Seocho Shopping’ as an alley-type shopping district is the first among Seoul’s autonomous districts. ‘Seocho Shopping’ is a single-type shopping building completed and operated in 1989 in the Seocho 4-dong apartment district, located right in front of Wonmyeong Elementary School, with many small cram schools and small-scale stores.
The district discovered commercial areas meeting the density requirements among all local commercial zones, supported the formation of merchant associations, and assisted with the application for alley-type shopping district designation, resulting in ‘Seocho Shopping’ being designated as the ‘2nd Alley-type Shopping District.’
With this alley-type shopping district designation, ‘Seocho Shopping’ will receive support benefits equivalent to those of traditional markets. It can apply for various support projects hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups or Seoul City to improve management environments or conduct joint marketing.
Also, by registering as an Onnuri gift certificate affiliated store, it is expected to enhance customer accessibility and increase commercial sales.
Last June, the district designated the Maljukgeori area around Yangjae Station as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ ‘1st Alley-type Shopping District,’ establishing a support base for small business owners including government support. Additionally, the Yangjaecheon-gil commercial area will be linked with the Yangjae Station ‘Maljukgeori Commercial Area’ to create a distinctive alley commercial district unique to Seocho.
To this end, the district plans to ▲ create an art road connecting the two commercial areas ▲ assign roles to each commercial area (Yangjaecheon-gil commercial area focusing on cafes, wine bars, and craft shops; Maljukgeori commercial area focusing on restaurants, liquor, daily necessities, etc.) ▲ build an integrated online shopping mall for the commercial areas.
