In his opening address, Governor Kim said, "Watching the flag bearers from 31 cities and counties enter, I felt pride in Gyeonggi Province and the strength of Gyeonggi-do," adding, "I ask you to demonstrate the skills and abilities you have honed over the past three days and create a venue for friendship and harmony through healthy competition."
He also cheered on the participating athletes and residents by saying, "Through sports, which are the foundation of a healthy and vibrant life, I hope all 14 million residents of the province will stay strong, and together we will overcome the economic difficulties and social conflicts and divisions ahead of us."
Under the slogan "Better Gyeonggi, Hope in Seongnam!", this year's event features 11,014 athletes from 31 cities and counties across the province competing in 25 sports, including athletics, swimming, and soccer. The competition is organized into Division 1 for the top 15 cities and counties based on population and Division 2 for the remaining 16.
Governor Kim also stated, "This sports festival is being conducted under the Gyeonggi RE100 eco-friendly concept," and pledged, "Gyeonggi Province will take the lead in practicing RE100 more than any other public institution."
Accordingly, the opening ceremony's electricity consumption was offset by purchasing power through the 'Green Premium' method, making it an eco-friendly event. The same approach was used for the opening ceremony of the 13th Gyeonggi-do Disabled Sports Festival on April 27.
The 'Green Premium' method involves purchasing renewable energy such as solar power from the Korea Electric Power Energy Marketplace equivalent to the expected electricity usage on the event day and receiving certification after use.
On April 24, Governor Kim announced the 'Gyeonggi RE100 Vision,' promising to cover 100% of electricity consumption with renewable energy to contribute to overcoming the climate crisis.
In addition, as part of strengthened safety inspections following the Itaewon tragedy, Gyeonggi Province, together with Seongnam City, conducted safety inspections of the sports venues with the external expert organization, the Sports Safety Foundation, on February 20-21 to ensure safe event operations. Follow-up inspections were also carried out on the 4th of this month with Seongnam City and the Gyeonggi Sports Council.
