Superintendent Lim attended the "National Assembly Forum on the Current Status and Solutions of Overcrowded Classes in Gyeonggi Province" held in the video conference room of the National Assembly Main Building in the afternoon, emphasizing, "While the school-age population is declining nationwide, Gyeonggi Province is the only region with many development areas where the population and number of students are increasing."
He added, "Overcrowded classes are a problem unique to Gyeonggi Province," and "the system where the Ministry of Education conducts uniform evaluations is ineffective for Gyeonggi, so we continuously raise the issue and request system improvements."
In particular, he stated, "The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education operates based on three firm principles: student-centeredness, cooperation with local governments, and monitoring changes in student numbers," and argued that "active cooperation from the central government, local governments, and the legislature is necessary to resolve overcrowded classes."
As a short-term measure to address overcrowded classes, the Gyeonggi Office of Education is promoting the conversion of special classrooms into general classrooms, deployment of modular teachers, and building expansions.
In the long term, efforts are underway to maintain an appropriate number of classes between schools considering regional and school-specific conditions, actively review the establishment of new schools to alleviate overcrowding in completed development areas, and request improvements to the Ministry of Education’s central investment review system.
