At the briefing, the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) presented an analysis of the central government's industrial promotion policies and conditions related to Pohang's three major new industries: secondary batteries, bio, and hydrogen. They also discussed Pohang City's sustainable growth plans through innovation growth competitiveness analysis and proposed directions for discovering and developing new industries for sustainable development.
Following this, a panel discussion on 'Pohang City's Three Major Industry Promotion Strategies' took place. Dr. Hong Jin-ki from KIET chaired the session, with participation from location experts Dr. Jang Cheol-soon and Dr. Lee Yoon-seok of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), industry experts including Seo Dong-kyung, head of the Daegu Research and Development Special Zone, and Kim Sang-gon, center director of Gyeongbuk Technopark, engaging in a lively discussion on Pohang City's three major industry promotion strategies.
Earlier this year, the city achieved investment attraction results worth 5 trillion KRW in the secondary battery sector alone during the first half, and in response to the rapidly increasing demand for industrial complexes, Mayor Lee Kang-deok presided over a countermeasure meeting in January to secure industrial land for the expansion of new growth industries.
Through this countermeasure meeting, the city recognized the necessity of restructuring the industrial structure and establishing a roadmap for new industry development to proactively respond to the surging demand for industrial land, especially in secondary batteries with abundant future growth potential, and to actively comply with government policies for fostering new industries, thereby securing Pohang City's future growth engines.
Accordingly, Pohang City plans to prepare a feasible new industry development strategy master plan that responds to rapidly changing domestic and international industrial trends, including ▲designation of a national advanced strategic industry specialized complex for secondary batteries ▲designation of a hydrogen fuel cell power generation cluster ▲establishment of a green bio venture campus ▲creation of a bio-health industry ecosystem through the establishment of a research-oriented medical school ▲development of a global corporate innovation park. Considering the lengthy time required for various impact assessments, permits, and approvals for industrial complex development, the city plans to proceed swiftly with procedures to secure new industrial land through proactive measures.
An official from KIET participating in this project stated, “Pohang is an optimal location for future industries with a well-established new industry ecosystem including research institutions, new industry companies, and global talent development,” and added, “We will do our best to establish a plan that utilizes regional innovation resources to become a leading model of a self-sustaining local city.”
