On the 9th, GS Construction stated, “As the contractor, we acknowledge our responsibility and deeply apologize. We have immediately reported this fact to the Accident Investigation Committee and will cooperate thoroughly and transparently throughout the investigation process. We will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the building.”
GS Construction announced that during the process of conducting an independent investigation alongside the official investigation committee regarding the parking lot collapse accident at Geomdan New Town AA13-2 block, they discovered some parts that appear to have been constructed differently from the design through ultrasonic imaging.
GS Construction decided to conduct a detailed safety inspection on all 83 apartment sites nationwide currently under construction through the Korea Institute of Architectural Structure Engineers, an accredited institution. Prospective residents will also participate in this inspection to enhance its completeness and actively alleviate their concerns.
GS Construction added, “Although our internal investigation found that this issue was caused by simple negligence, with no schedule shortening and cost reduction limited to about ten million won, this is an unacceptable mistake from the standpoint of a contractor who has prided itself on safety and thorough quality control. Taking this accident as an opportunity, we plan to thoroughly re-verify the structural design itself, which is the responsibility of the design firm, to ease the concerns of prospective residents.”
GS Construction will conduct structural reviews and site investigations of the 83 sites nationwide over the next 10 weeks in cooperation with the Korea Institute of Architectural Structure Engineers. They will first confirm the construction process and condition, and based on this, verify the structural safety of the apartment buildings directly with prospective residents through comprehensive opinions from responsible engineers and advisory professors. Additionally, they plan to further verify design compliance based on a sufficient number of samples.
Furthermore, during the three months of inspections, CEO Vice Chairman Lim Byung-yong and CSO Woo Moo-hyun will personally tour all 110 sites nationwide, including the 83 sites, to hold on-site safety inspection meetings.
