"Compensation for Investment Losses" New Voice Phishing Alert
Damage Continues in Gyeonggi and Chungcheong Regions... "Always Be Suspicious" Advice
The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters has urged the public to be especially cautious of new types of voice phishing (telephone financial fraud) crimes that approach victims by promising refunds or compensation for past losses in securities and cryptocurrency trading.
According to the police on the 9th, the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency is currently investigating a group involved in such voice phishing scams. Recently, similar voice phishing crimes have also been reported in the Chungcheong region.
The perpetrators introduce themselves as a company that compensates people who previously suffered losses in securities trading, claiming they found victims through the Financial Supervisory Service. They then ask victims for their bank account numbers and identification cards, take out loans in the victims' names, and request that the victims transfer money to a specific account, saying that investing in OO Coin will result in compensation.
The police advised that there is no organization that provides compensation or refunds for personal investments, and that the requested bank account numbers and identification cards are used to take out loans in the victims' names, so people should always be suspicious.
A National Investigation Headquarters official warned, "Most people think they are well aware of voice phishing crimes and become complacent, but the suspects thoroughly research personal information in advance, practice detailed scenarios, and even use cutting-edge technology, making it impossible to escape their schemes."
