"Households Living Separately from Parents, Average 2.2 Calls per Week"
Average 40 Visits and 112 Phone Calls Annually
Less Frequent Contact with Low-Income Households Compared to General Households
Households living separately from their parents were found to meet their parents an average of 3.3 times per month and make phone calls 2.2 times per week.
According to the "2022 Korea Welfare Panel Survey and Analysis Report" by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs on the 7th, these results came from the 17th Korea Welfare Panel supplementary survey conducted from March to July last year, targeting 3,130 panel household members.
The survey investigated the frequency of contact among households that reported having parents living separately (45% of the total).
The results showed that they visited about 40 times a year on average and made 112 phone calls. Converted, this means they visit 3.3 times per month and call 2.2 times per week.

View original imageAmong all respondents, the median frequency of contact with parents was 12 visits and 52 phone calls per year. This means that people with typical contact frequency meet their parents once a month and call once a week.
The number of visits has increased compared to 15 years ago. In the 2007 Korea Welfare Panel survey, the average number of visits was 33.9 times per year (median 12 times), and phone calls averaged 88.1 times (median 48 times). In 2019, visits averaged 39 times (median 12 times), and phone calls were 90 times (median 52 times).
Meanwhile, low-income households have consistently shown a tendency to have less frequent contact with their parents than general households. The research team explained in the report, "The frequency of visits and phone calls with parents living separately is generally higher in general households than in low-income households."

In the 2022 survey, low-income households averaged 39 visits and 91 phone calls per year with their parents, which was less than the 40 visits and 113 calls of general households. The proportion of low-income households living separately from their parents was also significantly lower at 21.41%, compared to 50% for general households.
