'Health Functional Foods' Used as Gifts for Family Month... Administrative Actions Taken Against Two Companies
Two manufacturers and sellers of health functional foods (health supplements), which are often consumed as gifts during Family Month, have been administratively sanctioned for violating facility standards and engaging in false advertising.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced on the 4th that it had identified two companies violating the Health Functional Foods Act and related laws after conducting an intensive inspection of 2,480 health functional food manufacturers and sellers from the 10th to the 21st of last month.
The MFDS explained, "The detected companies will be re-inspected within six months after administrative measures are taken by the relevant local offices to verify whether improvements have been made."
Additionally, the MFDS collected a total of 160 health functional food samples, including 60 domestically manufactured and 100 imported products, to test for functional ingredient and nutritional content, as well as standards such as coliform bacteria.
As a result, three products?one domestic and two imported?were judged non-compliant due to insufficient catechin content and probiotic counts.
Furthermore, the MFDS conducted detailed inspections at the import customs stage on 113 imported health functional foods and 1,479 processed foods. Among these, 12 products were found non-compliant and are scheduled to be returned or destroyed, according to the MFDS.
