On the 3rd, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups held a meeting in Ulsan to listen to the difficulties faced by shipbuilding subcontractors (Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard) and to propose solutions. Minister Lee Young of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Kwon Myung-ho, a member of the People Power Party (Ulsan Dong-gu), Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, and representatives of eight subcontracting companies participated.

The representatives of the subcontractors complained that since Ulsan City was removed from the 'employment crisis area' designation last December, they have been struggling with the burden of unpaid four major social insurance premiums and labor shortages. They requested the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to extend the repayment period for business stabilization funds, extend the loan period and increase the limit for policy funds from the Small and Medium Business Corporation, and relax the application criteria for the Youth Employee Tomorrow Savings Plus program.

Minister Lee Young stated, “The Ministry of SMEs and Startups is providing low-interest policy funds worth 4.2 trillion won to alleviate financial burdens and resolve funding difficulties for small and medium enterprises, including those in the shipbuilding industry.” He added, “We will actively review the difficulties faced by subcontractors and help the shipbuilding industry, which has been a strong pillar of the national economy, overcome the current challenges and leap forward once again.” He also said, “We will support the Regional Small and Medium Business Administration, Ulsan City, and all local innovation institutions to form a strong one team to maintain the world’s number one technological competitiveness.”
