LG Electronics Achieves First in Manufacturing Industry
LG Electronics has been recognized as the first company in the manufacturing industry to possess industry-leading security management systems and capabilities while utilizing open-source software (software with publicly available source code).
On the 21st, LG Electronics announced that it has been certified as a company compliant with the "International Standard for Open Source Software Security Management System (ISO/IEC DIS 18974)" established by the OpenChain Project of the Linux Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization. The OpenChain Project is a voluntary consortium of companies focused on compliance with open-source software licenses and management of security vulnerabilities.
In using open-source software, LG Electronics met all 30 or so prescribed security certification requirements, including ▲establishing internal security policies ▲periodic updates of security policies ▲use of various tools for security testing. LG Electronics is the only company in both South Korea and the global manufacturing industry to have obtained this certification. This signifies that LG Electronics' capabilities and management systems for addressing security vulnerabilities in both internal and external software supply chains are world-class.
Open-source software is characterized by its publicly available source code, allowing anyone to freely use it. It reduces the time and cost required for software development and is advantageous for ecosystem expansion, making it widely used in service and platform development. However, approximately 81% of open-source software used in development contains security vulnerabilities.
