Captain Lee Geun and a man in his 30s heading to Ukraine fined 3 million won
Not Actually Participating in the War
A man in his 30s, Mr. A, who departed for Ukraine with Captain Lee Geun, was sentenced to a fine.
On the 16th, Judge Park Sang-su of the Criminal Division 8 at Gwangju District Court sentenced Mr. A (38), who was indicted for violating the Passport Act, to a fine of 3 million won. Mr. A was prosecuted for entering and staying in Ukraine from March 6 to 14 last year.
The court stated, "The defendant visited Ukraine, which the state designated as a travel-restricted area to protect the life and body of its citizens, to participate as a volunteer soldier. This raises concerns about imposing an excessive burden on the state, thus there is a need for strict punishment."

The court added, "The defendant confessed to the crime, reflected on his wrongdoing, and appears to have participated passively following the proposal of Lee Geun, with whom he served in the military. Considering that the defendant did not actually participate in the war and that acquaintances petitioned for leniency, these factors were taken into account."
