Chairman Under Korea Federation of Trade Unions Prosecuted for Extorting Money by Threatening Construction Companies
The 4th Criminal Division of Daegu District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Seo Kyung-won) on the 5th indicted A (68), chairman of the construction site union under the Korean Federation of Trade Unions, on charges of extortion for extorting money from company officials while visiting construction sites.
A is accused of threatening 15 officials from rebar and concrete construction companies in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas 20 times from July 2018 to August last year by reporting or threatening to report unclear violations of safety regulations at construction sites to the Labor Office, thereby extorting 44.2 million won.
It was revealed that A committed the crime by exploiting the fact that subcontractor victim companies feared delays in construction, pressure from the primary contractor to comply with the construction schedule, and disadvantages in future bidding and contracts simply by being reported to and inspected by the Labor Office. Although the union had only about 19 members, A reportedly registered 1,010 members to appear as if there was a large backing.
