Professor Donggyu Lee of Dong-A University Publishes Two Books on Korea's Disaster Management System
Professor Dong-gyu Lee of the Department of Disaster Management at Dong-A University is set to publish two books discussing South Korea's disaster management system.
The books authored by Professor Lee, titled “Bold Nuclear Safety Management Written by a Social Scientist” and “The Itaewon Disaster: Discussing Disaster Management in Korea”, are scheduled for release on “National Safety Day” (April 16), marking the 9th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster.
“Bold Nuclear Safety Management Written by a Social Scientist” approaches nuclear safety from a social science perspective rather than the traditional engineering approach, reviewing plans and management systems for nuclear safety accidents, systems, and education, training, and evaluation based on emergency scenarios.
It is also structured to be understandable to the general public regarding nuclear safety management.
“The Itaewon Disaster: Discussing Disaster Management in Korea” contains records and organized content from Professor Lee’s participation as an expert member of the National Assembly’s “Special Committee for the Investigation and Prevention of Recurrence of the Yongsan Itaewon Disaster.”
The books emphasize the necessity of “learning” after large-scale social disasters and offer new perspectives to readers seeking answers as to why disasters repeatedly occur in South Korea.

He continued, “I hope these two books serve as a catalyst for the general public to take an interest in the causes of disasters and foster a learning culture aimed at solving fundamental problems.”
Since joining Dong-A University as a professor in 2012, Professor Lee has been actively involved in various aspects of disaster safety, dedicating himself to training disaster management experts for the government, corporations, and social organizations.
