Busan Port Authority Publishes White Paper on Busan North Port Redevelopment Project
Busan Port Authority (BPA, President Kang Jun-seok) is jointly publishing a white paper with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Cho Seung-hwan) that chronicles the history and future development plans of Korea's first port redevelopment project, the 'Busan Port North Port Redevelopment Project.'
The Busan Port North Port Redevelopment Project aims to transform the North Port area, which has declined in port functions since the opening of the New Port, into a new urban space to revitalize the deteriorated old downtown and return a beautiful waterfront space to citizens who have experienced inconvenience due to long-term port operations.
The Phase 1 project area (former Piers 1 to 4, Central Pier, International and Coastal Passenger Piers) will be developed as an 'International Marine Tourism Hub,' while the Phase 2 project area (Pier 5, port hinterland railway, and residential areas) will be developed as an 'International Business Center,' expected to contribute to regional economic revitalization and youth job creation.
In particular, the North Port redevelopment site is the planned location for the government-prioritized project, the '2030 Busan World Expo.' If the event is successfully hosted, it will play a role in promoting groundbreaking development in Busan.
The white paper being published this time consists of Volume 1, Volume 2, and an appendix.
Volume 1 systematically organizes the 'History of North Port Redevelopment and Overview of the North Port Redevelopment Project,' and Volume 2 covers the 'Current Status and Challenges of Integrated Development of Busan Port North Port.' The appendix contains reference materials such as project plan announcements.
BPA plans to publish an additional white paper at the final stage of the foundational project for Phase 2 redevelopment of the North Port.
Kang Jun-seok, President of BPA, stated, "From the first step of the North Port redevelopment project to the overall process and results, related issues, conflicts and mediation among various stakeholders, this white paper captures the efforts for the successful completion of public redevelopment and will serve as an important reference for other port redevelopment projects."
