Police Crack Down on 432 People... 22 Referred to Prosecution
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] The police have uncovered a large number of election offenders in the 3rd Nationwide Simultaneous Cooperative Head Election, which elects heads of cooperatives such as Nonghyup and Suhyup.
The National Police Agency announced on the 9th that during this election period, a total of 432 election offenders were caught, with 22 sent to the prosecution. For 28 individuals, the cases were closed without prosecution. Currently, investigations are ongoing for a total of 382 election offenders.
Looking at the types of offenses, 'money and goods election' involving providing money or entertainment to cooperative members was the most common with 296 cases (68.5%). Violations of election campaign methods such as pre-election campaigning (78 cases, 18.1%) and spreading false information (45 cases, 10.4%) followed.
The police stated that the number of election offenders this time decreased by 40.4 percentage points compared to the 2nd cooperative head election held in 2019.
Considering that the statute of limitations for election crimes is short at six months, the police plan to operate an intensive investigation period for three months to handle cases promptly.
