Memorial and Communication Space to be Established Near Seoul City Hall Afterwards
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has proposed a memorial event for all citizens to participate in at Seoul Plaza, where the Itaewon tragedy memorial altar is currently located, for five days starting from the 1st of next month. Afterwards, they announced plans to establish a temporary memorial space and communication area near Seoul Plaza.
Lee Dong-ryul, spokesperson for the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated at a briefing on the 7th, "We propose a memorial for the Itaewon tragedy with citizens and bereaved families together."
In this regard, Seoul City presented three proposals. First, from the 1st to the 5th of next month, marking the 159th day since the tragedy, they plan to operate a "truly meaningful memorial altar" enshrining the spirits and memorial tablets of the 159 victims.
Spokesperson Lee explained, "This memorial altar will be operated jointly by Seoul City and the bereaved families, with the meaning of honoring each and every victim individually," adding, "It will also provide comfort and healing for the pain and sacrifice caused by this tragedy."
He continued by urging firefighters, medical staff, Itaewon merchants, volunteers, and all citizens to mourn the victims together, saying, "We want to share a time to heal the emotional wounds and pain in the hearts of the bereaved families."
Along with this, Seoul City announced that after the memorial period, a temporary memorial space will be set up near Seoul City Hall. The spokesperson said, "We will establish a temporary memorial and communication space for the bereaved families in a convenient location near Seoul City Hall so that the families, the government, and Seoul City can communicate easily."
Furthermore, Seoul City stated that discussions will begin to establish a permanent memorial space. The spokesperson noted, "The government also launched the ‘10·29 Tragedy Victim Support Team’ on the 4th to provide support and communication for the Itaewon tragedy victims, especially for the installation of a memorial space," and promised, "Seoul City will do its best to prepare an official memorial space in cooperation with the government and the bereaved families."
