World Bank: "Direct Damage in Syria from Strong Earthquake Estimated at 6.6 Trillion Won"
The World Bank (WB) estimated Syria's direct damage from the major earthquake that occurred on the 6th of last month at approximately $5.1 billion (6.6 trillion KRW).
In a report released on the 3rd (local time), the WB stated that the scale of Syria's direct damage from the destruction of buildings, infrastructure, and cultural heritage amounts to about 10% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This estimate does not include the broader economic impacts or losses caused by the earthquake in Syria.
By region, the northern Aleppo province suffered the greatest damage. The damage in Aleppo was estimated at about $2.3 billion, accounting for 45% of the total. This was followed by Idlib province (37%, $1.9 billion) and Latakia province (11%, $549 million).
However, the WB noted uncertainty in estimating the direct damage, providing a lower bound of $2.7 billion and an upper bound of $7.9 billion.

According to the United Nations, the earthquake that struck southwestern T?rkiye and northeastern Syria resulted in over 45,000 deaths in T?rkiye and more than 5,900 deaths in Syria. In a separate report on the 27th of last month, the WB estimated T?rkiye's direct damage at $34.2 billion (44.3 trillion KRW).
