Why Does the Memorial Park Double the Number of Cremations Even When Deaths Do Not Increase?
Gumi City Memorial Park, Special Operation During Leap Month
Why is the Cremation Park Doubling the Number of Cremations?
The Gumi City Memorial Park, managed by the Gumi Facilities Corporation in Gyeongbuk, is doubling the number of cremation operations in accordance with the leap month occurring for the first time in three years. This is because a significant increase in cremation demand for exhumed remains is expected during the leap month period.
The leap month is an additional month added to the lunar calendar compared to a normal year, during which there is a custom of doing things that could not be done during the usual time, and funeral culture is also affected.
The park will expand the number of cremations from the usual 10 times per day to 20 times per day from March 22 to April 19. Cremations of exhumed remains during the leap month can be reserved starting one month in advance.
Reservations for the expanded cremation operations can be made online through the e-Haneul Funeral Information System starting at 9 a.m. on March 7.
Chaedong-ik, Director of the Gumi Facilities Corporation, said, “As the demand for exhumations surges during the leap month, we will do our best to minimize inconvenience to citizens by expanding cremation operations and conducting prior inspections of the facilities.”
