Xi Jinping Warns Against US Containment in Talks with Belarus: "Avoid Cold War Mentality and Economic Instrumentalization"
Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the United States to stop Cold War thinking and the politicization and instrumentalization of the global economy during a meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on the 1st.
According to China's state-run CCTV, President Xi held a summit at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the same day with President Lukashenko, who visited China the previous day as a state guest.
Regarding the Ukraine war, President Xi emphasized, "We must adhere to the direction of a political solution, abandon all Cold War thinking, respect the legitimate security concerns of all countries, and establish a balanced, effective, and sustainable framework for European security."
He added, "Relevant countries should stop politicizing and instrumentalizing the world economy and genuinely engage in efforts that help achieve a ceasefire and peaceful resolution."
This statement was interpreted as targeting the United States, which has recently intensified sanctions against Russia and even imposed sanctions on some Chinese companies trading with Russia.
President Xi also stressed, "China's position on the Ukraine crisis is consistent and clear," adding, "Encouraging reconciliation and promoting negotiations are at the core of China's stance."
In response, President Lukashenko expressed his agreement and support for China's "position on political resolution," announced on the 24th of last month, marking the first anniversary of the Ukraine war.
Earlier, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a document titled "China's Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis," stating that "(Russia and Ukraine) should resume direct talks as soon as possible."
President Lukashenko is a current leader from a former Soviet state and is regarded as a prominent pro-Russian and pro-Putin figure. His government allowed Russian forces to use Belarusian territory as a staging ground when Russia invaded Ukraine a year ago.
