Hawol III "LIV Golf Season Opener Champ"... 'Team Event Victory Too'
LIV Golf Series Mayakoba Final Round 3
Charles Howell III (USA) achieved a come-from-behind victory.
On the 27th (Korean time), Howell III fired an 8-under-par round in the final third round of the LIV Golf Series opening event Mayakoba (total prize money $25 million) held at El Camaleon Golf Course (par 71, 7,049 yards) in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, securing a dominant 4-stroke victory with a total score of 16-under-par. This marked his first win since joining LIV Golf last year, earning him a winner's prize of $4 million (approximately 5.3 billion KRW). Howell III also led his team, Crushers GC, composed of Paul Casey (England), Bryson DeChambeau (USA), and Anirban Lahiri (India), to victory in the team event with a total score of 26-under-par. The team event prize money was $5 million (approximately 6.6 billion KRW).
Starting the final round in third place, just one stroke behind, Howell III recorded eight birdies without a single bogey. He showed remarkable focus by shooting six under par over the first eight holes, including consecutive birdies on holes 2 and 3, and a streak of four birdies from holes 5 to 8. In the back nine, he added two more birdies on holes 10 and 17. Howell III turned professional in 2000 and has earned three wins on the PGA Tour. In LIV Golf, he previously finished in the top 10 at last year's Bangkok event.
