Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Seongheon) will commemorate the 104th anniversary of March 1st Movement by opening the Seodaemun Prison History Hall, a symbol of Korea’s independence movement, free of charge and hosting the event “Seodaemun, 1919 The Shout of That Day.”
This site is where many independence activists endured hardships, including Yu Gwansun, who was arrested during the March 1st Independence Movement and died as a martyr.
From 11 a.m. to noon, an “Independence Movement Reenactment Performance” will be held on the outdoor stage inside the history hall, vividly conveying the emotions that filled every corner of the country 104 years ago.
The program includes theatrical performances by actors, performances by the Children’s History Choir, recitation of the March 1st Declaration of Independence, three cheers for independence, a Taekwondo demonstration, followed by a street march.
Leading the procession is a large Taegukgi flag, followed by flags bearing the independence movement slogans and large portrait flags of independence activists such as Kim Gu, Yu Gwansun, and Ahn Changho. The street march starts at the main gate of the history hall and continues about 200 meters to the March 1st Independence Movement Memorial Tower.
Participating citizens will wave Taegukgi flags and shout cheers together, reflecting on the noble sacrifice, cooperation, and unity spirit of their ancestors who fought to regain the country.
From 2 to 3 p.m., a mini concert and Taekwondo performances themed on the independence movement will also be held on the outdoor stage of the history hall.
On this day, related memorial halls and organizations such as Anseong 3.1 Movement Memorial Hall, Anti-Japanese Women Independence Movement Memorial Association, and Kim Hanjong Doctor Memorial Hall will participate, offering over 20 experience programs including making Taegukgi pinwheels, creating personalized anti-Japanese women independence activist postcards, and making miniature prison cells.
These activities will take place throughout the Seodaemun Prison History Hall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Samiljeol, and anyone can participate by applying on-site.
Additionally, the event will feature a “Street History Quiz Show” where visitors answer historical questions while touring the history hall, a “Hanbok Flashmob” performance in front of the large 12-prison cell Taegukgi flag, and a free photo printing service.
Starting from the 27th of this month, a virtual “Seodaemun Prison Map” will be newly created and opened using the metaverse platform Zepeto. Anyone can enter the prison cell interiors through their own character and view the “Independence Activist of the Month” exhibition.
Visitors who take a certification photo in this virtual space will receive souvenirs at the history hall on March 1st. The “Seodaemun Prison Map” will continue to operate thereafter.
