On the 15th, the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced this at the '2nd Medical Student Clinical Practice Support Project Performance Exchange Meeting' held at the Koreana Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul. The medical student clinical practice support project is designed to help medical students interested in special fields within essential medical care, where workforce training is difficult, participate in and learn from medical sites that are usually hard to experience, such as observing surgeries.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare first conducted the project during the summer vacation in 2021, targeting trauma and pediatric cardiology fields. Last year, the project was expanded by adding the infectious disease field and allowing clinical practice during the winter vacation as well. Through this, 14 medical institutions selected through a public contest operated clinical practice programs, with a total of 173 students completing the program.
The Ministry plans to allocate 1.48 billion KRW this year, doubling the previous year's budget, reflecting the importance of the project and the public's expectations for essential medical care. It also aims to continuously expand the project scale by encouraging participation from medical institutions and medical students to cultivate future talents responsible for essential medical care.
At the exchange meeting, about 100 people, including supervising professors who guided the clinical practice and students who completed the program, attended to share case presentations and discuss achievements and future development directions.
