[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] A firefighter who discovered a fire in a building on the way home from work prevented it from spreading into a large blaze.
According to the Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters on the 14th, firefighter Oh Kyungsoo of the Jeonju Wansan Fire Station, who was leaving after an overnight shift the previous day, noticed black smoke coming from the rooftop of a commercial building in Samcheon-dong, Jeonju.
Firefighter Oh immediately entered the building and ran toward the source of the smoke.
The fire was burning tables and garden plants on the rooftop of the 5th floor, posing an urgent risk of spreading to nearby structures.
Firefighter Oh found the indoor fire hydrant installed in the building, connected the hose, and suppressed the flames before handing over the scene to the arriving firefighters.
The commercial building where the fire broke out housed multiple-use facilities such as a sauna and a mart, so failure to extinguish the fire early could have resulted in casualties and potentially escalated into a major fire.
Firefighter Oh Kyungsoo said, “I just did what was naturally expected of a firefighter,” and added, “I will continue to do my best so that the trust of the residents is not in vain.”
He also stated, “If ordinary citizens use fire extinguishers or indoor fire hydrants promptly, they can control the fire early and greatly reduce damage,” and emphasized, “It is useful to know how to use firefighting equipment in advance.”
