Yongin City Donates $100,000 Relief Fund to Earthquake-Affected Kayseri City, Turkey
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province will deliver $100,000 in relief funds to its sister city Kayseri in T?rkiye, which has been devastated by earthquake damage.
Yongin City announced on the 10th that it plans to allocate contingency funds according to the 'Ordinance on the Promotion of Internationalization and Exchange Cooperation' and deliver the relief funds in the form of a designated donation for Kayseri City's disaster recovery through the Korean Red Cross.
Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin said, "We will deliver $100,000 in relief funds through the Korean Red Cross. We will not ignore the tragedy and difficulties that have occurred in T?rkiye, the brother country that fought alongside South Korea in the Korean War to protect the Republic of Korea." He added, "In line with the government dispatching the largest-ever rescue team, our Yongin Special City will also support our brother nation, T?rkiye."
Kayseri is a city located 240 km in a straight line from the earthquake-affected area.
Since establishing a sister city relationship with Kayseri, T?rkiye in 2005, Yongin has continued exchanges in various fields such as economy, trade, tourism, culture, and arts.
During the Korean War, T?rkiye deployed about 15,000 troops, the fourth largest after the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Among them, about 4,000 were killed or went missing, suffering significant losses.
In the Battle of Kimryangjang-ri in Yongin (January 25?27, 1951), Turkish forces fought a fierce hand-to-hand battle and defeated two divisions of the Chinese Communist Army. On September 6, 1974, a memorial monument for the Turkish troops was erected in Dongbaek-dong, Giheung-gu to honor their spirit.
