Statement Released Immediately After Impeachment Bill Passed in the National Assembly
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min expressed regret regarding the National Assembly's approval of the impeachment motion, stating, "I am very sorry to cause concern to the people."
On the afternoon of the 8th, immediately after the motion was passed at the plenary session of the National Assembly, Minister Lee released a statement saying, "The authority entrusted to the National Assembly by the people must be exercised in accordance with its purpose," and added, "I hope the gap in public safety caused by this unprecedented situation will be minimized."
He continued, "The Ministry of the Interior and Safety will carry out the duties entrusted by the people without wavering," and stated, "We will sincerely participate in the Constitutional Court's impeachment trial and do our best to restore the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to normal as soon as possible."
Meanwhile, the National Assembly passed the impeachment motion against Minister Lee by a secret ballot during the plenary session, with 179 votes in favor, 109 against, and 5 invalid votes out of a total of 293 votes, and forwarded it to the Constitutional Court.
At the moment the impeachment resolution is delivered to the Constitutional Court, Minister Lee's official powers are suspended. Additionally, the appointing authority, the President, cannot accept Minister Lee's resignation nor dismiss him. The duties are expected to be taken over in an acting capacity by Vice Minister Han Chang-seop.

The Constitutional Court will deliver a ruling on Minister Lee's impeachment within 180 days (6 months) from the date the impeachment resolution is delivered. If six or more of the nine justices agree, the impeachment will be confirmed.
