On the 24th (local time), the Sumner County Sheriff's Office in Kansas, USA, announced that a 30-year-old man living in Wichita, Kansas, died after being shot by a rifle fired when his dog stepped on it on the 21st.
According to authorities, the man was on a weekend hunting trip with his dog when the accident occurred. At the time, hunting equipment including the rifle was loaded in the back seat of the pickup truck, and the dog stepped on it, causing the bullet to be fired.
The man, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was hit by the bullet. Although emergency responders performed CPR, the man ultimately passed away. It has not yet been revealed whether the deceased man was the dog's owner or if there were other people in the vehicle at the time.
The Sumner County Sheriff's Office stated, "The investigation is ongoing, and preliminary findings suggest it was an accident related to hunting."
Meanwhile, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 500 people died from gun-related accidents in 2021. Amid this, a series of fatal shootings in the western United States has caused shock.
