Construction Company Partners with LG Uplus to Develop UAM Integrated Transfer Centers and Participate in UAM (Urban Air Mobility) Commercialization

Efforts to Build Integrated Transfer Centers Utilizing Subway Transportation Infrastructure... Support for Infrastructure and Administrative Matters

Joint Research on Environmental Factors Including Flight Safety, Weather Conditions, and Flight Obstacles

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seoul Metro and LG Uplus have joined forces to establish a UAM (Urban Air Mobility) platform across Seoul.

Seoul Metro and LG Uplus announced that they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the 13th to cooperate on the development of UAM integrated transfer centers and the early commercialization of UAM.

UAM refers to an aerial transportation ecosystem utilizing a three-dimensional urban air traffic system, representing a future-type air taxi that maximizes mobility efficiency within the city. It is planned to operate for passenger and cargo transport purposes by combining with electric Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) capable Personal Air Vehicles (PAVs).

Through this MOU, both parties plan to collaborate on building future-oriented UAM integrated transfer centers by utilizing subway transportation infrastructure and to promote the early commercialization of UAM.

To this end, Seoul Metro will support administrative matters such as systems for introducing integrated transfer centers and infrastructure for vertiports (vertical takeoff and landing airports), while LG Uplus will develop traffic management systems for route operations and conduct demonstrations of UAM-related communication technologies.

The UAM integrated transfer centers are being considered for introduction at subway stations with high passenger traffic such as Samseong Station, Suseo Station, and Guro Digital Complex Station, which serve subway, GTX, and bus users.

Currently, Seoul Metro operates an urban rail network consisting of 275 stations across lines 1 to 8 throughout Seoul.

Along with demonstrations related to the introduction of integrated transfer centers, both parties will jointly conduct preliminary research on flight environment factors including the feasibility of UAM, technology safety, local community acceptance, as well as environmental factors such as weather conditions and flight obstacles along flight routes.

Kim Seong-ryeol, Head of Technology at Seoul Metro, stated, “We anticipate a new transportation revolution when the subway stations operated by Seoul Metro throughout the city combine with UAM, a cutting-edge future urban transportation technology. Through this cooperation with LG Uplus, we expect Seoul Metro to play a major role as a core provider of new future transportation services.”
