"53% Public Opinion Says Lee Jae-myung Should Independently Address Judicial Risks"
Media Tomato Poll
47.6% Agree with Small Constituency Reform
People Power Party Support ↓ Democratic Party Support ↑
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] A majority of the public agrees that the political structure, which is effectively operated as a two-party system with the People Power Party and the Democratic Party, needs to be changed.
According to a public opinion poll released on the 13th by Media Tomato (conducted by wireless ARS method from the 9th to the 11th over three days, targeting 1,033 adults aged 18 and over nationwide at the request of News Tomato), 52.3% of respondents said the current de facto two-party system should be changed to a multi-party system. 27.7% believed the two-party system is appropriate, and 20.0% were unsure.
Regarding the electoral system, which has been pointed out as a cause of the two-party system, 47.6% agreed that the 'single-member district system' should be reformed. Those who disagreed with the reform accounted for 33.9%, and 18.5% were unsure. The single-member district system, where only one member of the National Assembly is elected per district, has been criticized for reinforcing the two-party system and promoting political polarization.
President Yoon Suk-yeol's administration received a positive evaluation of 38.3% and a negative evaluation of 59.3%. Compared to last week's survey, positive opinions dropped by 5.6 percentage points, while negative opinions rose by 5.6 percentage points.
In terms of party support, the Democratic Party's approval rating was 45.6%, the People Power Party's was 39.3%, and the Justice Party's was 2.2%. While the Democratic Party's support increased by 2.8 percentage points, the People Power Party's support decreased by 4.1 percentage points, changing the rankings of first and second place compared to last week.
Meanwhile, regarding how the Democratic Party should respond to the judicial risks faced by Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, 53.0% of respondents said 'the leader should respond independently,' while 41.3% said the party should respond together with him.
