Jeon Hae-cheol: "Lee Jae-myung's Prosecutor Investigation Should Be Met with a United Democratic Party Front"
"Investigation of Lee Jae-myung is a retaliatory probe"
Pro-Moon Policy Forum Sa-ui-jae to Launch This Week
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 9th, Jeon Hae-cheol, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said regarding the prosecution investigation of Representative Lee Jae-myung, "We must respond as a united front."
In an interview on MBC Radio's 'Kim Jong-bae's Focus,' Rep. Jeon said, "I believe the investigation into Representative Lee has the nature of an excessive retaliatory investigation," and added, "I think it is inevitable for the party to respond as a united front together regarding the investigation of the opposition party leader." As one of the pro-Moon Jae-in faction's key figures, Rep. Jeon's defense of Representative Lee's position concerning his judicial risks is a noteworthy point.
He explained, "Although he has already been indicted this time, the investigation and indictment were made based on statements made by the candidate who lost in the presidential election," and said, "In any presidential election so far, I think there has never been a case where the defeated opposition party leader was indicted under election law, especially for false information disclosure. In that regard, I believe the prosecution is conducting an excessive investigation."
Regarding voices within the party calling for separating Representative Lee's judicial response from the party, he expressed a different view. Rep. Jeon said, "So far, no clear illegality regarding Representative Lee has been confirmed, so it is not appropriate to prepare for other scenarios," and added, "We must proceed centered on the party leader, and especially regarding the creation of a political purge atmosphere by the Yoon Seok-youl administration, political retaliation, and various maladministrations, I think the Democratic Party must respond well as a united front."
Additionally, Rep. Jeon explained that a policy research forum named Sa-uijae, composed of figures from the Moon Jae-in administration, is scheduled to launch this week. He introduced, "It is a forum to reflect on the Moon Jae-in administration's policies, evaluating both the achievements and shortcomings," and said, "It was created to prepare well for the many policies that were well done during the Moon Jae-in administration and those that should be historically continued. Participants will include members of the Moon Jae-in administration's cabinet, experts who participated in national task committees, and those who worked at the Blue House."
When asked whether this is a response to the current government's investigations into past issues of the Moon Jae-in administration, such as the nuclear phase-out project, allegations of statistical manipulation, and the shooting incident of public officials in the West Sea, he replied, "I think we must naturally respond to excessive and groundless policy attacks." However, regarding the possibility that Sa-uijae might become a kind of pro-Moon (Chin-Moon) faction hub, he said, "That is not the case at all," and added, "It is completely wrong to interpret it politically."
