Yeosu Coast Guard, Island Area Guardian Angel Doctor Patrol Ship Plays Vital Role
Securing Medical Services in Island Areas through Rapid Maritime Emergency Patient Transport System
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] Jeonnam Yeosu Maritime Police Station (Chief Park Je-su) announced on the 5th that "last year, patrol vessels played a significant role in transporting emergency patients at sea (onboard) and island areas, protecting the precious lives of the people."
According to Yeosu Maritime Police, the number of emergency patient transports in sea and island areas has been steadily increasing, with a total of 243 people urgently transported to land last year, an increase of 40 people (19.4%) compared to 2021.
The proportion of emergency patients occurring in sea and island areas shows that sea transports accounted for 25.5% (62 people), while island transports accounted for 74.5% (181 people), with the majority being emergency patient transports from island areas.
By age group, the proportion of emergency patients begins to rise from age 41 and above, with 47 patients (19.3%) aged 61-70, 48 patients (19.8%) aged 71-80, and 42 patients (17.3%) aged 81 and older, indicating a high proportion of elderly patients.
Due to the aging population in remote island areas within the jurisdiction, the proportion of emergency patients is increasing. When general vessels are difficult to use due to bad weather or late-night hours, the rapid transport by patrol vessels and the emergency medical system improve medical services in island areas, which are medical blind spots.
A Yeosu Maritime Police official stated, "We will strengthen the rapid and efficient transport system for emergency patients in sea and island areas and continue to protect the precious lives of the people as the ambulance of the sea."
Meanwhile, in the service satisfaction survey on patrol vessel emergency patient transport performance hosted by the West Sea Maritime Police Agency, the Dolsan Police Substation coastal rescue boat was selected as the best Doctor Coastal Rescue Boat for two consecutive years.
