On the 3rd (local time), Mark Harper, UK Secretary of State for Transport, said in a radio interview that COVID-19 testing for passengers arriving on flights from China is solely for information-gathering purposes. He explained that this measure was taken because the Chinese government has not shared COVID-19 related information, and the purpose is strictly to track the virus.
The UK requires passengers on flights from China to submit a negative COVID-19 test result in advance, but testing at Heathrow Airport after arrival is not mandatory. Secretary Harper, who was at the forefront of opposing quarantine measures during the pandemic, said this time the government has made a reasonable and balanced decision.
