Ministry of the Interior and Safety Changes Itaewon Disaster Death Toll to 159
Receiving Relief Funds and Other Payments Same as Previous Deceased Cases
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 3rd that, after consulting with experts in relevant laws and the medical field regarding the recent deaths of injured victims from the Itaewon disaster due to tragic choices, a direct causal relationship has been established, and these individuals will be recognized as deceased victims.
Accordingly, the deceased will receive relief funds and other benefits under the same provisions as previous victims in accordance with the "Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety".
The decision on the 159th victim follows the extreme choice made by a surviving high school student traumatized by the disaster about one month after the incident, on the 12th of last month.
