Prosecutor General Orders Thorough Investigation into Military Service Corruption: "Tainted by Black Money"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok on the 29th instructed, regarding the recently surfaced large-scale military service corruption case, "Expand the joint investigation team for military service corruption and cooperate closely with the Military Manpower Administration to conduct a swift and thorough investigation."
On the same day, at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, General Lee received an investigation status report from Yang Seok-jo, head of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office, which is investigating the military service corruption case, and urged, "Strictly investigate and enforce the law against those who evade military service obligations that must be fairly fulfilled, brokers who taint the sacred duty of military service with 'black money,' and medical institution workers." He also instructed the Supreme Prosecutors' Office's Scientific Investigation Department and Anti-Corruption and Strong Crime Department to provide support such as digital forensics, appraisal, and legal review.
The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office and the Military Manpower Administration formed a "Joint Investigation Team for Military Service Evasion" earlier this month to track down evaders and brokers involved in the crimes. It is reported that dozens of people are currently under investigation, including those who falsely fabricated symptoms of diseases such as epilepsy to receive military service exemption or reduction, and brokers who received money from them and provided specific methods for evading military service.
