Korean Voice Phishing Counselor Expelled from China Sent to Prosecution
Deported After Serving Sentence for Another Crime in China... Arrested at Airport
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Taewon] A South Korean national voice phishing counselor who was deported from China has been sent to the prosecution.
On the 27th, the Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul sent Mr. A, who is accused of fraud and other charges, to the prosecution under detention. Mr. A was arrested at Incheon International Airport immediately upon returning to Korea, underwent a police investigation, and was sent to the prosecution.
Mr. A is suspected of participating in domestic voice phishing crimes while residing in China as a call center counselor in 2017.
He impersonated financial institutions to victims, claiming, "If you are a family member of an employee, we can open a minus account," and demanded money by saying that money had to be sent to build transaction records to open a minus account. The amount of money remitted to Mr. A through this method reached approximately 300 million KRW.
Later, he committed another crime in China, was sentenced to imprisonment, and served his sentence. After his release, he was deported from China and returned to Korea, where the police identified his entry and arrested him at the airport.
