Goheung-gun's 'Space Launch Vehicle Science Complex Development' Gains Momentum
Expectations for Regional Economic Revitalization Linked to Designation of Space Launch Vehicle Industry Cluster
[Goheung=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shim Jeong-woo] On the 27th, Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that it secured 500 million KRW in the 2023 budget under the Ministry of Science and ICT for the basic plan service fee of the "Space Launch Vehicle Science Complex Construction Project."
The "Space Launch Vehicle Science Complex Construction Project" is a project to establish space science education and experience facilities modeled after the U.S. Kennedy Space Center, centered on the Naro Space Center, in response to the nationwide increased interest and educational demand in the space sector following the successful launch of the Korean launch vehicle "Nuriho."
So far, in connection with the region's key pending project, the space launch vehicle cluster, Goheung-gun has conducted all-out activities including multiple visits and proposals to the government and the National Assembly together with Jeollanam-do to finalize this project. As a result of these efforts, the basic plan service fee was finally reflected in next year's national budget.
The government plans to expand space science education facilities such as astronaut training programs and Galaxy Express in the Bongrae-myeon Naro Space Center area, and conduct a basic service in 2023 to finalize detailed projects for space culture activities aimed at expanding the base of space.
Gong Young-min, Governor of Goheung-gun, said, "With the confirmation of the designation of the launch vehicle specialized district in the space industry cluster and securing the basic service fee for the Space Launch Vehicle Science Complex, Goheung has firmly established its status as a center city for aerospace," adding, "We will do our utmost to revitalize the local economy through the construction of space launch vehicle industry infrastructure and the expansion of education and experience complex facilities."
A Goheung-gun official said, "The designation of the launch vehicle specialized district and the 300 million KRW basic survey service fee for the construction of the Gwangju-Goheung (Naro Space Center) highway to improve accessibility to the Naro Space Center have been reflected in the government budget, which is expected to give momentum to the promotion of the space launch vehicle industry cluster."
Goheung-gun is reviewing various measures to attract large-scale leisure and accommodation facilities nearby, which will respond to new tourism demand and be utilized as a hinterland for the space industry cluster, in connection with the "Science Complex" project.
